Here is more detailed information of the different species of fish that I keep.  All of these fish are great beginner fish (you know, since I too am a beginner) and will do well in a range of water conditions.

Cory:

  • Latin Name:
    Corydoras

  • Water pH / Temperature:
    6.9-7.1 / 74-80 deg F.

  • Feeding:
Flake, and stuff that falls on the bottom of tank

  • Max. Size:
    4"

  • Notes:
These little catfish are very active swimmers, and are a joy to watch.  They come in an endless array of colors, and there are many different sub-species.  Should be kept in schools of at least 2, but more the better.

Dwarf Gourami:

  • Latin Name:
    Colisa lalia

  • Water pH / Temperature:
    6.5-7.5 / 74-80 deg F.

  • Feeding:
    Flakes, brine shrimp

  • Max. Size:
    2"

  • Notes:
One of my favorite fish.  Add variety and color to any tank.  The dwarf comes in various different colors, the more popular are Neon Blue, Powder Blue and Sunset.

Oto Cat (a.k.a O-Cat):
  • Latin Name:
    Otocinclus affinis
  • Water pH / Temperature:
    6.5-7.2 / 74-80 deg F.
  • Feeding:
    Algae, vegetable tablets
  • Max. Size:
    2"
  • Notes:
One of my favorite algae eaters.  Similar to the Chinese Algae eater, but much smaller.  Likes to be in schools of 4 or more.

Zebra Danios:

  • Latin Name:
    Brachydanio rerio

  • Water pH / Temperature:
    6.5-7.2 / 76-82 deg. F.

  • Feeding:
    Flakes, brine shrimp

  • Max. Size:
    3"

  • Notes:
A great schooling fish (I'd recommend no less then six if you have room for them). These guys wouldn't hurt a fly.  Not the brightest of fish, but very entertaining to watch swim around.  For example, hold a cup in the tank, and watch how many actually swim into it!
